Bird Studies Canada is not run by bird brains. The non-profit organization helps with the study and conservation of birds. With its headquarters located just outside Port Rowan, BSC got its start in 1960 as the Long Point Bird Observatory.

Originally a banding station, the observatory began to focus on other programs and grew, becoming its own organization in 1968. In April 1998, the company became officially known as Bird Studies Canada.

Bird Studies Canada employs more than 40 fulltime staff, whose jobs range from co-ordinating volunteer programs to bird banding. BSC runs a number of national programs which rely on participation from thousands of volunteers. These programs include the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey, the Marsh Monitoring Program and Project FeederWatch.

The banding station continues to function and has banded over 830,000 birds.
