As part of my program at Conestoga, I got to do work placement with a media organization. I chose The Tillsonburg News. In 2010, I mostly worked on the progress edition, which is a collection of articles on local businesses.
The following year, I returned and when I was told that the theme of this year’s progress would be “Rural Routes” and that I’d get to write articles on history, I was excited.
This was the best of both worlds, because I would get to write and learn at the same time. And during my research, I was constantly amazed by the stories that had happened in the area.
A boxing match between two legends on Long Point. A Chinese war hero who was born in Tillsonburg. A man who wrestled bear cubs once roamed the area.
It’s learning about and writing stories like this that attracted me to journalism in the first place.
Half of the articles in the edition were features on local history, and the other half were on businesses. These articles are from the history portion.
